Solar Storm

NASA launched a satellite on Thursday night to explore the mysterious, dynamic region where air meets space. The satellite - called Icon, short for Ionospheric Connection Explorer - rocketed into orbit following a two-year delay. It was dropped from a plane …

NASA will launch a new satellite into the atmosphere today in the hopes of learning more about the mysterious phenomenon of space weather. Named ICON, or Ionospheric Connection Explorer, the satellite is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 9:…

Hurricanes can cause widespread damage because they are so expansive, long-lasting, and powerful. Two of the costliest hurricanes on record, Katrina and Harvey, tallied damage numbers close to $125 billion dollars, respectively. As impressive as those numbers…

Exactly how dangerous are solar storms? Scientists think the Carrington Event was one of the most powerful ones to ever hit Earth. They also think that storms that powerful only happen every couple centuries or so. But a new study says we can expect more stor…

It's been an eventful year for sky-gazers in the northern U.S. The northern lightsa phenomenon that's normally limited to the Arctic circleappeared above the country's northern border in March 2019, and then again at the beginning of September. If Michigan re…

In early September 1859, something world-changing occurred. Earth was wracked by a monumental solar storm, which lashed our magnetosphere with a coronal mass ejection, the like of which had never before occurred in recorded history. It's called the Carringto…

Researchers propose in a new study why an extreme solar storm in 1859 was so damaging to Earth's magnetic field. They compared the storm with other extreme storms in history, suggesting this storm is not likely unique. The September 1859 Carrington Event eje…
