Black Hole

        | Published: Sunday, December 11, 2022, 7:20 Astronomers have detected a massive galactic explosion, and they believe it is a result of a black hole's collision with a star. The blast named GRB 211211A lasted for around 50 seconds and spewed copious gamma rays in a…

Clues to a black hole's origins can be found in the way it spins. This is especially true for binaries, in which two black holes circle close together before merging. The spin and tilt of the respective black holes just before they merge can reveal whether the invisible giants arose…

Dear DM168 readers, On 17 October one of the members of South Africa’s judiciary stuck his neck out and in a judgement warned of alleged police corruption linked to hitmen, the taxi industry and gangsters in the Western Cape. Judge Daniel Thulare’s unprecedented judgment, delivered in the Western Cape high…

Astronomers have spotted a strange blast of gamma radiation from space that defies categorisation, and it may mean a gap in our understanding of how black holes form Space 7 December 2022 By Leah Crane Gamma ray bursts blast radiation into space NASA/Swift/Cruz deWilde A strange blast of radiation from…

The "baby" wormhole, created on Google's Sycamore 2 quantum computer was not created with gravity, but through quantum entanglement…

A black hole can launch a powerful relativistic jet after it tidally disrupts a star. If this jet fortuitously aligns with our line of sight, the brightness is Doppler boosted by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, such on-axis relativistic tidal disruption events have the potential to unveil cosmological quiescent black…

Earlier this year, the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (ESO’s VLT) was alerted after an unusual source of visible light had been detected by a survey telescope. The VLT, together with other telescopes, was swiftly repositioned towards the source: a supermassive black hole in a distant galaxy that had…
