Black Hole

Our universe began with a puzzle. For 100 million years after the big bang, it expanded. Then something strange happened — this expansion suddenly accelerated and has continued to accelerate ever since. Today cosmologists think some kind of pressure must have forced this acceleration, all powered by huge amounts of…

Observations of supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies point to a likely source of dark energy – the ‘missing’ 70% of the Universe. The measurements from ancient and dormant galaxies show black holes growing more than expected, aligning with a phenomenon predicted in Einstein’s theory of gravity. The…

A new paper has proposed an absolutely wild idea. What if aliens are creating black holes to use as quantum storage? It sounds crazy, but some scientists say it could give us a solution to the Fermi Paradox, which essentially states that if life is common in our universe, why…

Home News The so-called Tadpole near the galaxy's center could be the victim of a rare, intermediate-mass black hole. (Image credit: Keio University) An enormous, deformed dust cloud that astronomers nicknamed "the Tadpole" could point to the location of an extremely rare type of black hole never confirmed to exist…

Observations have found black holes spanning 10 orders of magnitude in mass across most of cosmic history. The assembly of stellar and supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in galaxies can help to diagnose the origins of locally observed correlations between SMBH mass and stellar mass.   A team of researchers led…

A peculiar cloud of gas, nicknamed the Tadpole due to its shape, appears to be revolving around a space devoid of any bright objects. This suggests that the Tadpole is orbiting a dark object, most likely a black hole 100,000 times more massive than the Sun. Future observations will help…

Home News An artist's concept of a supermassive black hole, complete with a fiery accretion disk. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech) Supermassive black holes could be the engines driving the expansion of the universe, according to research that proposes a solution to "one of the biggest problems in cosmology."  By comparing supermassive…

(Image credit: Mark Garlick/Science Photo Library/Getty Images) When astronomers discovered that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate, they theorized that some force must be pushing things farther apart and overcoming gravity, which should be slowing things down.…
