Black Hole

An illustration of the long-dormant black hole "waking up" as a glut of gas and dust pours into its maw. (Image credit: ESO/M. Kornmesser) For the first time ever, astronomers have witnessed the black hole at the center of a galaxy roaring to life in real time — and they're…

DOI: 10.48550/arxiv.2404.11604 European astronomers have investigated a recently detected black hole designated Gaia BH3. In their results, they found that the…

(Image credit: EHT Collaboration/Aviad Levis)) Scientists have used artificial intelligence to construct a three-dimensional model of an energetic outburst, or flare, that occurred around the Milky Way's central black…

A discovery by astronomers from the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission has revealed the most massive stellar black hole ever found in the Milky Way galaxy. The black hole, named Gaia BH3 or BH3 for short, weighs an impressive 33 times that of the Sun. The discovery was made when…

The biggest hole formed from a collapsed star in the Milky Way Galaxy resides 2,000 light years away from Earth in the Aquila constellation. Researchers spotted the black hole when they noted the wiggle of a nearby orbiting star. "No one was expecting to find a high-mass black hole lurking…

An artist's illustration showing two smaller black holes within the gas surrounding a larger black hole. Could a black hole stuck inside the sun be engulfed by the ball of plasma in a similar way? (Image credit: NASA/Caltech/R. Hurt (IPAC)) Just before the end of 2023, astrophysicist Matt Caplan announced…

India launches New Years rocket to study black holes by Sheri Walsh New Delhi (UPI) Jan 02, 2024 India's space agency successfully launched a rocket Monday from Sriharikota spaceport to help scientists improve their "knowledge of black holes." "2024 lifted off majestically," the Indian Space Research Organization wrote Monday in…

Years before she was even sure the James Webb Space Telescope would successfully launch, Christina Eilers started planning a conference for astronomers specializing in the early universe. She knew that if — preferably, when — JWST started making observations, she and her colleagues would have a lot to talk about.…

News Science & Astronomy White holes are theoretical cosmic regions that function in an opposite way to black holes. (Image credit: Future/Adam Smith) Black holes seem to get all the attention. But what about their mirror twins, white holes? Do they exist? And, if so, where are they?  To understand…

Astronomers transfixed the public in April 2019 when they released the first-ever image of a black hole, produced by radio wave data from a collaboration of telescopes around the world known collectively as the Event Horizon Telescope. Now, a team of physicists and researchers have developed the plans for the…
