Black Hole

Main Blog > Black Hole Closest To Earth Found by ESO Astronomers Astronomers from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and other institutes have found the black hole that is currently the closest to Earth. The aforementioned black hole lies just 1000-light years from our planet, and is closer to our…

Astronomers believe they have found the closest black hole to our solar system, lying just 1,000 light-years away, which in astronomical terms, is right in our neighbourhood. This photograph shows the region of the sky, in the constellation of Telescopium, where HR 6819 can be found, a triple system consisting of…

“Until There Was Nothing” …or “How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Black Hole” Someday this will pass and there will be nothing left. The inevitable spaghettification of it all. That’s not something to fear “because we come from nothing” as Alan Watts puts it… and from nothing…

A group of astronomers from the European Southern Observatory, or ESO, and other institutes has discovered a black hole that’s only 1000 light-years from Earth. While the distance is vast, the new black hole is closer to our Solar System than any other black hole found so far. The black…

Astronomers Discover Earth’s Nearest Known Black Hole Astronomers have just announced the discovery of Earth’s nearest known black hole, and it’s visible with the naked eye. The black hole—located in the HR 6819 star system—has two companion stars, which means despite its invisibility, it can be tracked. Although this newly…

A black hole was discovered lurking quietly in a system just 1,000 light-years from Earth. The black hole, which is part of the system called HR 6819, is the closest black hole scientists have ever spotted. The researchers suggest that there are likely other black holes hiding nearby, invisible to…

The closest black hole to Earth is only 1,000 light years away, astronomers have discovered, as they reveal its stars are visible to the naked eye in a clear night sky. Located in a system called HR 6819, in the constellation Telescopium, the hole is so close to our planet that…

Black holes might be black, but they are not necessarily invisible. They come in a variety of sizes, from minuscule to supermassive, with a key common feature: a boundary known as the event horizon, beyond which light cannot escape. Black holes near an object such as a star, however, can…

VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) in Cerro Paranal, Chile. Photo: Y. Beletsky (LCO)/ESOAstronomers and physicists continue to pursue the answers to the universe’s deepest questions, but on many matters, including dark matter and dark energy, they are stymied. What if an autonomously operating telescope, free from human…
