Aerosol filter samplers probe the air over the Southern Ocean on the Australian Marine National Facility's R/V Investigator Credit: Kathryn Moore/Colorado State University Colorado State University Distinguished Professor Sonia Kreidenweis and her research group identified an atmospheric region unchanged by human-related activities in the first study to measure bioaerosol composition…

Antarctic glaciers may be capable of shrinking at much faster rates than scientists previously imagined — raising new concerns about the future of the ice sheet. New evidence suggests that parts of the ice sheet retreated by as much as 6 miles a year at the end of the last…

Enjoy this short, Wes Anderson-esque guide to one of the most interesting places you can visit, the Union Glacier Camp in Antarctica. The camp operates during the Antarctic summer (November through January) and is dismantled at the end of each season. It is located in the spectacular (and remote) southern…

While most of the snow in Antarctica is white, snow found on its coast can be green—and as global temperatures rise, more green snow has been found across the continent.Small amounts of green snow have always been visible in Antarctica, which is caused by microscopic algae blooming on top of the…

Private industries have helped drop the cost of launching rockets, satellites and other equipment into space to historic lows. That has boosted interest in developing space — both for mining raw materials such as silicon for solar panels and oxygen for rocket fuel, as well as potentially relocating polluting industries off…

May 22nd, 2020 by Johnna Crider  Green snow in Antarctica is another sign that the temperature is warming there. The snow turned green due to blooming algae. What algae need to bloom are warmth, sunlight, and nutrients — for growth and reproduction. Temperature and salt concentration are the determining factors…

Penguins at risk in Antarctica In coastal Antarctica, some snow isn't white — it's green. And while small amounts of the green snow have been visible for years, it's starting to spread across the continent because of climate change. According to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications,…

Unexplained high-energy particles are coming up out of the Earth. Abed may have been onto something in Community when he said he couldn't let go of the idea of parallel timelines, some darker than others. Sure, there's an explanation to be had with Schroedinger's equation within the logic of the show and…

The pristine ice is turning a distinctive shade of green. Image Credit: Matt Davey, Andrew Gray et al. The effects of climate change have sparked a bloom of microscopic algae across the Antarctic peninsula. If there's one color that nobody ever associates with Antarctica, it's green, however that could soon…

Paris (AFP) - Parts of the Antarctic Peninsula will change colour as "green snow" caused by blooming algae is expected to spread with increases in global temperatures, research showed Wednesday.Although often considered devoid of plant life, Antarctica is home to several types of algae, which grow on slushy snow and…
